Task: Hauora & Physical Education

Challenge

  • On page 8 of the article it states that ‘it is essential for pre-service teachers to undertake practical teaching rounds to further improve quality delivery of effective teaching in PE and improve content knowledge to implement the TGfU approach.’ Your challenge is to become familiar with the following resource called ‘Movewell’ that was sent out to primary schools throughout New Zealand last year. Here is a link to the Movewell website and resources.

During your first practicum in schools, our challenge is for you to try out at least one of the TGfU activities in this resource (or modification of) with your class.

The ‘Movewell’ resource is a nationally-supported educational resource that is strongly informed by TGfU theory and pedagogy. It also encapsulates a broader conceptualisation of hauora. Its subtitle is: Supporting Children’s Learning and Enjoyment of Movement. The huge philosophical and pedagogical shift that is taking place in Health and PE curriculum is this focus on enjoyment. This has often been missing in our pedagogical approaches of the past. I would encourage you to read through this initial booklet which outlines its pedagogical base and also outlines the five keyt principles of the resource. These are:

1. Play in central to learning.

2. Game contexts provide authentic learning experiences.

3. Good pedagogy involves active teaching that caters for all children’s needs.

4. Through games, children develop their personal, social and cultural identity.

5. Playing games develops the competence and confidence to play games with others and try other physical activities
