Task: Planning a sequence of lessons in a strength-based inquiry focused approach
Task:
Follow this link to a folder which holds planning documents for a series of four rich tasks. The four problems are as follows;
Lesson one: Pepi and Mum wanted to make 15 ula lole for prize giving. They wanted 29 lollies on each ula lole. How many lollies would Mum need to buy?
Lesson two: Pepi and Mum wanted to make 16 ula lole for prize giving. They wanted 49 lollies on each ula lole. How many lollies would Mum need to buy?
Lesson three: The whānau had arranged buses to transport the 337 whanau to the whānau reunion. They organised 13 buses. How many people were on each bus?
Lesson four: The whānau had arranged buses to transport the 374 whanau to the whānau reunion. They organised 16 buses. How many people were on each bus?
Find a group to work with as a collaborative planning group, choose one lesson from the sequence. Using the planning document provided in the folder, follow the order of instructions as set out below;
- Follow the links to the elaborations and the progressions on the document, look closely at these for multiplication in level 1-4.
- Identify the specific progression from level 1-4.
- Read the problem carefully and with your group anticipate the ways ākonga will solve the problem at each level. Use the progressions/elaborations to guide you.
- Now anticipate the potential misconceptions that ākonga might hold at each level. Use your Van de Walle text to guide this.
- Using the Van de Walle posters provided, and with your anticipated strategies in mind. Decide on the big mathematical ideas this trajectory of learning is focused on. What ideas or properties are the ākonga developing an understanding of?
- Predict the mathematics ākonga might need to be able to access the task. Remember the task should be challenging and productive collaborative struggle is required to solve it.
Post your planning document in the trajectories of learning forum for the lesson you have chosen. Compare with the other lessons shared by other planning groups.
